NTC to Mayor de Blasio: Stop Choosing Who Gets to Exercise Their 1st Amendment Rights

For Immediate Release June 5, 2020 Contact: kon@newtolerance.org New York City has been hit especially hard with COVID-19, and its leaders responded with strict stay at home and social distancing laws enforced by police. These rules continue with one exception – the recent protests sparked by the detestable killing of George Floyd. New Tolerance Campaign is mobilizing its activists to send a message to NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio calling on him to stop the double standard of allowing or shutting down gatherings based solely on his own opinion of what’s important. At the direction of Mayor de Blasio, New Yorkers gathering in groups of 10 or more to mourn their dead, practice their religion, or protest the closure of their businesses are arrested. Groups gathering in the hundreds or thousands to protest police brutality are left alone. Either COVID-related social restrictions are vital for public health, or they are not. Why people gather should not be a factor if the concern, as de Blasio has said, is combating an indiscriminate health pandemic that has killed over 100,000 Americans. When asked about his inconsistent position, de Blasio responded by saying, “when you see a nation, an entire nation, simultaneously grappling with an extraordinary crisis seeded in 400 years of American racism, I’m sorry, that is not the same question as the understandably aggrieved store owner or the devout religious person who wants to go back to services.” While de Blasio may care why certain people gather, COVID-19 does not. Either these restrictions are necessary to stop COVID, or they are not. To now qualify them based on de Blasio’s perception of certain people’s needs undermines the argument that they were so vital in the first place. NTC’s message to de Blasio is this: freedom of speech, assembly, and religion are all enshrined in the First Amendment for a reason. Suspending gatherings across the board in a pandemic is one thing, but if he feels it is necessary to lock down his city, he should apply the same rules to everyone.  ###

Spot the Intolerance in Central Park

The past couple of months have been hard, but there have also been bright spots as people from all walks of life have stepped up to support healthcare workers, give to those in need, or just make the simple choice to stay home. One such act of service came from the charitable organization Samaritan’s Purse, which set up and staffed an entire tent hospital in Central Park. They partnered with Mount Sinai Hospital to provide care to over 350 COVID-19 patients when the main hospital ran out of beds. In response,  federal, state, and local officials scorned the group over some of their religious beliefs, begrudgingly taking their assistance before running them out of town as soon as they felt the worst of the virus had passed.  Samaritan’s Purse is an evangelical aid organization with a record of providing help where it is needed most. Its current homepage features stories about the team helping with tornado recovery in Tennessee, caring for mothers and babies in war-torn South Sudan, and providing clean water to the Bahamas. Its most well-known program is “Operation Christmas Child,” which provides Christmas presents to millions of impoverished children in over 150 countries. So why the animosity? Samaritan’s Purse is staunchly conservative Christian, and employees must sign a statement of faith that includes defining marriage as heterosexual-only. Furthermore, the organization’s leader Franklin Graham has repeatedly and unapologetically made strongly anti-LGBTQ and anti-Muslim comments.  On May 1, NYC City Council Speaker Corey Johnson put out a statement in which he called Graham “notoriously bigoted” and “hate-spewing” and said the group’s “continued presence” in New York “is an affront to our values of inclusion” and “painful for all New Yorkers who deeply care about the LGBTQ community.” After explaining that Good Samaritan was tolerated for a brief amount of time out of the City Council’s commitment “to supporting [health care system] workers and protecting our city’s public health,” he went on to demand that “Mount Sinai must sever its relationship with Samaritan’s Purse.”  Why? Because “[its] leader calls the LGBTQ community ‘detestable’ and ‘immoral.’ Not because the pop-up hospital refused to service members of LGBTQ community (they saw patients regardless of sexual orientation), and not because the NY healthcare system returned to normal operation (it remains under unusual strain). Speaker Johnson has every right to disagree with Graham and his organization, but there is a double standard when he calls those who put themselves at risk to save the lives of strangers while asking nothing in return an “affront to the community.” Pursuing tolerance is admirable, but pursuing tolerance so far in one direction that you become intolerant in another is not. At that point, you’ve gone from tolerance to tribalism. Johnson’s inability to accept the help of Samaritan’s Purse during the COVID-19 pandemic, of all situations, on behalf of others in desperate need, puts him squarely within the later.  Thankfully, not every New Yorker took Johnson’s stance. One man who strongly disagrees with Graham on many issues still found something in common with the group: the need to help people. He became one of the pop-up hospital’s best volunteers. His story is worth a read because it illustrates a critical lesson that Johnson has missed: as we fight intolerance, we must make sure we don’t become intolerant in the process ourselves. NTC Mobilizes Activists to Call on WSU to Stop Viewpoint Discrimination

For Immediate Release April 29, 2020 Contact: kon@newtolerance.org Worcester State University (WSU), a public university in Massachusetts, boasts “open exchange of ideas” as one if its key principles, but its Student Government Association’s (SGA) recent rejection of a student application for a Turning Point USA chapter displays clear viewpoint bias, violating both the school’s own standards and their First Amendment obligations as a public university. New Tolerance Campaign is calling on WSU President Barry Maloney to stand by the university’s stated principles and stop this reckless discrimination! According to an investigation by the non-partisan Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), students Tony Winship and Alvin Marchena went through WSU’s standard process of establishing interest in a new club and obtaining a faculty supervisor. The students then made a presentation to the SGA who denied their request because of potential “negative impact on campus climate.” Turning Point describes itself “as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to identify, educate, train, and organize students to promote freedom,” and its ideology is unmistakably right-wing. Turning Point’s leaders’ controversial statements and members’ edgy activism have gained national attention on more than a few occasions. But WSU describes itself in the student handbook as “an inclusive community that supports each person’s First Amendment right to express opinions and ideas, including unpopular or controversial viewpoints, without governmental interference, retaliation or punishment.” Winship had this to say: “We spoke to hundreds of students while tabling and only a retired art professor had an issue with our group. Clearly the SGA doesn’t represent the students anymore. Despite all of this we remain hopeful the university will eventually do the right thing.” Though WSU officials have said the decision was the SGA’s to make, as FIRE wrote in a letter to the school, “public colleges and universities cannot deny official recognition to student organizations based on viewpoint. Doing so is an abdication of their well-established constitutional obligations.” Public universities are a place where students should be engaging with controversial ideas, and their right to do this is protected by the Constitution. With just a few clicks, concerned activists can join NTC in telling WSU that their discriminatory behavior is not only violating students’ First Amendment rights, but setting a terrible example for its students. ###

How to Disagree on Matters of Life and Death

This week, we asked our Facebook followers what they had learned or observed about tolerance during the pandemic. The answers were overwhelmingly pessimistic. Commenters expressed frustration with the new battle between people who want to re-open the country as soon as possible and those who want to extend stay-at-home measures until the pandemic has been well and truly defeated. They have a point. Social media and talk shows are rife with vitriolic exchanges between people accusing each other of wanting to sacrifice grandma to Wall Street, or on the other side, of being tyrants who don’t care about people being able to feed their families.  It’s an emotional time. People are dying, and the stories out of overwhelmed hospitals in places like Italy and New York City are heartbreaking and terrifying. On the other hand, people are struggling to afford the necessities. They are watching businesses that they’ve poured themselves into shuttering. They fear a lengthy depression where people aren’t able to support their families. The harsh truth is that almost anything worth doing involves risk. Car accidents claimed 38,800 lives in the United States last year. Contagious diseases have been killing us long before coronavirus showed up. Yet, we still choose to drive and attend crowded events. As individuals, it’s only natural that we have a wide variety of opinions on how much risk we’re willing to accept. We are going to disagree, and disagree passionately. However, we have a choice on how we express our disagreement. The choice to reopen and the choice to remain closed both have heartbreaking consequences. Calling someone heartless, stupid, or tyrannical for daring to take a stand doesn’t help anyone. Framing the situation as black and white is dishonest. Issuing arrest warrants for journalists who disagree with you is definitely the wrong approach (you can join our latest campaign to send that message to Liberty University).   Let’s all agree on three things:  COVID-19 is a serious threat Every human life is valuable Every day we remain shut down increases hardship and struggle  If we keep those basic truths in mind and approach each other with empathy and compassion, we can have an honest, constructive conversation about how to move forward. We can use this tough time to bring us closer together (even as we remain six feet apart). Finally, while there is far too much negativity circulating, let’s not miss all the good that’s happening. Neighborhoods are creating Facebook groups and using other online forums to meet local needs while major national charities have stepped up to feed thousands and even set up a functional hospital in Central Park. Restaurants are providing free food to healthcare workers, and distilleries are cranking out hand sanitizer to donate. Certain corners of the internet and TV shows that use conflict to get ratings will convince you of the worst. For our nation’s future and for your personal sanity, make a point of taking the time to seek out the best.

NTC to Jerry Falwell Jr. and Liberty University: Drop Charges Against Journalists Doing Their Jobs

For Immediate Release April 14, 2020 Contact: kon@newtolerance.org Freedom of the press is essential to American freedom. Our nation’s largest universities should be defenders of that freedom, not obstacles to it. This is especially true of one with “Liberty” in its name. That is why New Tolerance Campaign is calling on activists across the country to tell Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. to retract the arrest warrants his university issued against two journalists.  Under the leadership of Jerry Falwell Jr., Liberty obtained arrest warrants against two journalists accusing them of trespassing on its campus. The journalists, a freelance photographer for The New York Times and a reporter for ProPublica, had both visited campus before contributing to unflattering stories about Liberty’s controversial response to COVID-19. NTC takes no position on the validity of these articles. While the journalists were technically on private property without permission, pedestrians stroll onto college campuses all the time without fear of criminal prosecution. Falwell defended the criminal charges by saying that he was protecting his students from these journalists who were likely coming from COVID-19 hotspots like New York and D.C., though students are allowed to return to campus regardless of where they had traveled so long as they self-quarantine for two weeks. Further, just days after the arrest warrants were issued, Liberty’s own news outlet wrote a story lamenting that an alumnus’s arrest while protesting an abortion clinic “is evidence that the government is intent on using regulations imposed by COVID-19 to suppress religious expression.” If the First Amendment is as sacred to Liberty as this story suggests, its stance on the First Amendment on its own campus is hypocritical. Liberty President Falwell’s inconsistent policy towards tolerance does his students and those that follow his leadership a great injustice by leading them down the path of hypocrisy. Liberty should live up to its name by immediately dropping the charges against the journalists and taking the First Amendment seriously. ###

COVID-19 or Kung Flu: How the Battle Over the Name Misses the Point

Much airtime has been given to the fight over how we refer to the virus that is turning the entire world upside down. One faction strongly opposes any China references, claiming it increases racism against people of Chinese and other Asian descent. Another faction has doubled down on calling it the “Chinese virus”, or more creatively, the “Kung Flu”, insisting that we must not forget that China should be held accountable for its part in the outbreak. But is the truth mutually exclusive? To at least to some degree, the Chinese government hid the true nature of the outbreak from the rest of the world, and it’s true that the Chinese people have been targeted outside China. The truth about how the virus started and why it spread so quickly has yet to be fully elucidated. However, we do know that the Chinese government initially silenced whistleblowers, that they sent bad test kits to other countries, and according to U.S. intelligence, they have been continuously downplaying their own death and infection numbers. These appalling acts are not out-of-character for this government either. They have imprisoned hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of innocent Uyghurs for their religious beliefs and then sent them off to factories to be used essentially as slave labor (NTC has run several campaigns in the hopes of relieving at least some of their suffering). They have responded to peaceful Hong Kong protests with extreme violence. Their surveillance and treatment of their entire citizenry is nothing short of dystopian. This oppressive government deserves far more scrutiny than it has received. At the same time, discriminatory conduct against Chinese Americans, and Asian Americans in general, have anecdotally increased since the outbreak reached the United States, and statistics on race-related crimes, when they are available, are likely to confirm the trend. It is especially egregious when the racism is directed by, and towards, children. There has been a flood of stories of Asian children experiencing bullying and rejection from their peers. While some bullies may have just been looking for an opportunity to be cruel, others are likely acting out of true fear or misunderstanding. That is absolutely something we as a society must correct. America has a history of tragedy bringing us closer together. Despite many acting with compassion in the face of the COVID pandemic (NTC recently ran campaigns in support of several of these good Samaritan projects), others have turned this into another opportunity to vilify each other. The solution is to keep perspective on the real villains and victims. We must deal with China’s government harming its own people and the world. We must also proactively stand up for victims of discrimination and racism and make sure our children know better. Those are both big tasks, and changing the name of the virus will not accomplish either.

New Tolerance to UW-Parkside: Fire Covid Conspiracy Theory Touting Professor

For Immediate Release April 2, 2020 Contact: kon@newtolerance.org The COVID-19 pandemic has infected 930,000 people and killed at least 47,000 globally. It has brought many cities and countries to a near stand-still, creating historic rates of unemployment and economic hardship with no end in sight. The New Tolerance Campaign recently ran several campaigns thanking some of our society’s good Samaritans that have risked their physical and economic health to keep people healthy and safe. Unfortunately, not all responses to the COVID crisis have been positive. University of Wisconsin-Parkside Professor Seif Dana’s comments are too reprehensible to ignore.  NTC is calling on its activists to tell Chancellor Debbie Ford of UW-Parkside to fire Dana for his despicable comments on terrorist organization Hezbollah’s television station. Dana is the Associate Dean of UW-Parkside’s College of Social Science and Professional Studies, and Institute for Professional Educator Development Department Chair. On April 1st, the Jewish News Syndicate broke the story that Dana had told terrorist organization Hezbollah’s television news station that COVID-19 is the result of a leak “from a laboratory at Fort Detrick in the United States,” and compared it to America’s bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II.  In the same interview, Dana simultaneously downplayed the impact of the coronavirus, stating that “more people die every year, not just from diseases that you can get vaccinated for, like malaria, but also from the West’s economic policies…than what is happening now.” Dana then compared the situation to Hitler’s actions in World War II: “This is exactly what happened with Hitler. Hitler did not do anything out of the ordinary. He did not do anything that had not been done by the Europeans before….Hitler came to be viewed as Satan just because he did what he did in Europe.” These outrageous comments, clearly meant to spread a conspiracy theory designed to rile the audience up rather than ease the tension and stress that everyone is feeling, are an abomination of the responsible and fact-based approach we expect our professors of higher education to take. UW-Parkside’s mission includes the effort to “generate, disseminate and apply knowledge through research, professional and creative activity that benefits communities throughout the region and the world.” Dana not only missed that mark completely, but he purposefully flouted it in conduct that is unacceptable for someone with his dual leadership roles at a respected university. He must go. Join New Tolerance Campaign in calling on UW-Parkside’s Chancellor to fire Dana and expel his poisonous conspiratorial worldview from campus. ###

Tell UW-Parkside: Prof Blaming the U.S. for Coronavirus Must Go

Coronavirus has infected 930,000 people and killed at least 47,000 globally. It has brought many cities and countries to a near stand-still, creating historic rates of unemployment and economic hardship with no end in sight. While some are risking their lives to provide medical care and necessities, one professor used the pandemic as an opportunity to go on Hezbollah’s TV station and blame the U.S for the entire outbreak, even making comparisons to nuclear war and Hitler in the process. Please join NTC in calling for him to be immediately removed from his position. Seif Dana is the Associate Dean of UW-Parkside’s College of Social Science and Professional Studies, and Institute for Professional Educator Development Department Chair. On April 1st, he told terrorist organization Hezbollah’s television news station that COVID-19 is the result of a leak “from a laboratory at Fort Detrick in the United States,” and compared it to America’s bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II. He did not do anything that had not been done by the Europeans before….Hitler came to be viewed as Satan just because he did what he did in Europe.” These comments, clearly meant to spread an absurd anti-American conspiracy theory, are an abomination of the responsible and fact-based approach we expect from our university professors. UW-Parkside’s mission includes the effort to “generate, disseminate and apply knowledge through research, professional and creative activity that benefits communities throughout the region and the world.” Dana did the exact opposite. He must go.  With just a few clicks, you can join NTC in calling on Chancellor Debbie Ford of UW-Parkside to fire Dana for his despicable comments and ensure that the school does not continue to give him a platform for his vile conspiracy theories.

New Tolerance Campaign Switches Gears to Say ‘Thank You’ to 5 Coronavirus Heroes

For Immediate Release March 19, 2020 Contact: kon@newtolerance.org The New Tolerance Campaign (NTC) has a reputation for calling out organizations and leaders for their wrongdoings and demanding they correct course. Today, however, we’re switching gears to recognize and thank five companies that are doing good in the face of the deadly Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic by going above and beyond to help their employees and communities. To do this, NTC is creating a series of thank you cards that people can digitally sign and personalize. NTC will also give signers a simple way to tweet their gratitude and ask others to sign the card as well. NTC will then send a copy of the thank you card and responses by both email and snail mail to the recipients. We will engage our current network of activists and run ads on Facebook inviting people across the country to participate. The first thank you card launching today will go to restaurateur and philanthropist José Andrés and his company ThinkFoodGroup. Andrés proactively turned his upscale restaurants in the NYC and Washington D.C. areas into “community kitchens” where those who are struggling can get free meals, while those who can afford to pay can get a meal for an unusually reasonable price of $7. The continued cash flow will allow ThinkFoodGroup to pay all employees their full wages as they serve those in the community who need it most. He described his decision in a moving video that’s well worth a watch.  NTC has four additional recipients that will be rolled out daily over the following week, but suggestions are welcome and can be sent to info@newtolerance.org. New Tolerance Campaign was founded on the belief that businesses, organizations, and community leaders have the power and responsibility to create a more tolerant and compassionate society, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to lift up those who are doing it right!  ###

5 Ways to Use Your Time Alone to Promote Tolerance and Understanding

Coronavirus has just been officially labeled a pandemic, and public officials are begging us to wash our hands and, when possible, to stay home. If you find yourself at home with more free time than you previously anticipated, why not make it your goal to use that time meaningfully? Here are NTC’s 5 suggestions for how you can work towards a more tolerant world and a more tolerant you without leaving your couch. 1. Find small ways to encourage friends and family Start small with your network. Our daily lives can be so busy that it’s easy to overlook what is going in in the lives of our friends, family, and coworkers. Take a moment and think about the people that would appreciate a supportive or congratulatory note in the mail. Do you have a lonely friend or relative who would love a phone call? Is there a new parent or someone with a health struggle that could use a home-cooked meal? Now is the perfect time to stop putting off the relationships that need a little TLC, even if you don’t spend time together in person. 2. Have a real conversation with someone you disagree with Be part of the solution to end division in our nation. Think of someone in your life who you respect, but generally disagree with. Set up a phone call or FaceTime date and ask them why they believe what they believe. Make your goal to listen and learn, and avoid arguing. Hopefully, they’ll ask you to share as well. You may not change each other’s minds, but you’ll both likely leave the conversation with greater empathy for those you disagree with. 3. Read a non-fiction book or watch a documentary you wouldn’t normally watch Similarly, you can seek a book or a documentary from a different perspective than yours and absorb it with an open mind. Look for something thoughtful, not angry or inflammatory. Can you find more common ground with the people who hold that view than you previously thought? Are there facts or arguments that can make you more deeply examine your own beliefs? You might be surprised by what you find. 4. Make a list of the things you admire about people you disagree with and a list of things you would change about your team As a nation, we have become experts at identifying everything wrong with the people we view as our opponents while making excuses and exceptions for our own team. Take a moment to identify a few things you genuinely admire about people on the other side and then honestly think through your own side’s weaknesses. Thinking in this way can help us disagree more productively and respectfully, and reveal where we ourselves may be part of the problem. 5. Take action with us You can’t attend a rally or volunteer in a soup kitchen from home, but you can send an email or a tweet urging American institutions to fight intolerance. Check out NTC’s campaigns to see if something you’re passionate about is on the list or find some motivation – or maybe check out something that you’ve never delved into before. Whatever you decide to do, we hope you stay safe and find a way to make the most of an uncertain time. If you do try one of our suggestions, we would love to hear about it. Let us know on Facebook or Twitter!

NTC Mobilizes Activists to Demand Apple Stop Using Forced Uyghur Muslim Labor

For immediate release March 9, 2020 NTC is mobilizing activists to demand that Apple stop its grotesque use of forced Uyghur labor in their Chinese factories. This hypocritical practice – Apple often claims to be socially aware – is incredibly inhumane. Now that Apple is aware of their human rights violations, they must stop them immediately. Over the last two years, the world’s eyes have been opened to the cruel treatment of China’s Uyghur Muslim population by its government, which has been using an advanced surveillance state to abduct, isolate and brainwash innocent Uyghurs because of their religious beliefs. On March 1st, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) released an explosive report revealing a sickening new twist to the terrifying saga: many of these already tortured Uyghurs are being rented as slave labor to Chinese manufacturers producing products for well-known American companies. After being held in dystopian brainwashing camps, Uyghurs are shipped across the country to work in factories. They aren’t allowed to leave or practice their religion, and any time away from the factory floor is spent in indoctrination classes meant to strip them of their Uyghur identity. Through extensive research, ASPI found that participating factories were in the supply lines of at least 83 American and international brands including Apple, Nike, Amazon, Victoria’s Secret, and Nintendo. While it’s possible that these companies previously had no idea what was going on, they know now. We’re starting with Apple because they claim to “hold ourselves and our suppliers to the highest standards to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect.” Yet, ASPI identified at least four Apple-linked factories that are using forced Uyghur labor, including one that CEO Tim Cook visited in 2017. In addition to the activism platform, NTC is also running Facebook ads targeting Apple employees: Apple responded to the initial report with a statement saying that they were unaware, but they need to know that their customers and the American people are watching closely and expect them to take absolutely corrective action as soon as possible. They can choose to be heroes to thousands or willing perpetrators of one of the greatest human rights abuses of our time. ### Photo Source: ‘Strengthening patriotism education and building a bridge of national unity’ (加强爱国主义教育搭建民族团结连心桥), China Ethnic Religion Net (中国民族宗教网), 7 November 2019, online.

Call on Apple to Stop Profiting from Forced Labor in China

Your iPhone (or Android) may have been manufactured Uyghur Muslims being held in modern-day slavery. Now, you can use that iPhone to help put an end to this vile exploitation! Over the last two years, we’ve slowly been learning about how the Chinese government has been abducting, isolating, and brainwashing innocent people simply because of their religious beliefs. On March 1st, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) released an explosive report revealing a sickening new twist to the terrifying saga: many of these already tortured Uyghurs are being rented as slave labor to Chinese manufacturers producing products for well-known American companies. Through extensive research, ASPI found that participating factories were in the supply lines of at least 83 American and international brands including Apple, Nike, Amazon, Victoria’s Secret, and Nintendo. While it’s possible that these companies previously had no idea what was going on, they know now. Will you join us in making sure this is an issue they can’t ignore? To start, we’re calling on Apple to take action. Apple proudly claims “we hold ourselves and our suppliers to the highest standards to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” but ASPI identified at least four Apple-linked factories that are using forced Uyghur labor, including one that CEO Tim Cook visited in 2017. Send an email to Apple and a tweet to Tim Cook urging them to act quickly and decisively. They can choose to be heroes to thousands or to be knowing participants in one of the greatest human rights abuses of our time. Whose side are you on??

NTC’s last campaign brought out some pretty angry responses. The campaign, if you missed it, focused on a Republican MT state rep who claimed that the Constitution calls for socialists to be shot. His own party had already called on him to resign, and we thought it was a no brainer to join the call. Isn’t the whole point of American Constitutional freedom that the government can’t punish you for what you believe? Here are just a few of the many responses that we got to our email announcing the campaign: “Go get f***ed you left wing b*tches!” “His concept is great! Gitmo would be more humane for the Socialists and Communist Leftists in America.” “When you can be a true American and support the president in the American people then I listen. But you know what Nazis that’s what you are. That’s all you are.” The troubling thing is that these people were on our email list because that had participated in a past campaign calling for some other entity to stop enabling intolerance. In fact, most of them had participated specifically with a campaign asking Congress to retract support for CAIR because of their history of alliances with anti-Semites like Linda Sarsour, a Bernie Sanders surrogate, and Ilhan Omar, a Democratic representative from Minnesota. To be clear, NTC is non-partisan and non-political although our campaigns do occasionally involve politicians. We take action on a wide variety of issues because tolerance touches a wide variety of issues, and true tolerance means calling out intolerance no matter who perpetrates it. That’s why we’ve targeted both Democrats and Republicans. While these email responses were a new level of vitriol and labeling, the basic pattern is nothing new. Since we launched in October, NTC’s social media channels have been full of commenters speculating about our politics and coming to wildly different conclusions based on the most recent post. As a society, we seem to have lost the ability to engage with other people or organizations as unique entities instead of members of “my team” or “the other team.” This tribalism that has gripped our nation has given everyone blind spots. Far too often, we will strongly condemn bigotry against some groups, then shrug off bigotry against others, or worse, quietly speculate about whether the victim deserved it…. or openly speculate that they should be shot! This needs to stop. When our society has so strongly sorted itself into us vs. them, it’s not surprising that people make assumptions about NTC. But ultimately, that’s why we exist. Bridging the divide starts with consistent standards. Bigotry is bigotry, no matter which “team” the victim or the aggressor is on. That’s why we’re asking you to join us. Our goal is to bring together people with a wide variety of viewpoints who can respectfully point out inconsistencies in others while welcoming constructive criticism themselves. So who’s side are we on? We’re on the side of anyone working in good faith to make our nation more tolerant. Are you in?

NTC Mobilizes Activists to Call for Resignation of MT Rep Who Says Socialists Should Be Shot

For Immediate Release On Jan. 31, Montana State Rep. Rodney Garcia sparked outrage by claiming at a public forum that the United States Constitution calls for all socialists to be jailed or shot. Whether Garcia knew this was a lie or not, it is un-American to silence political opponents, especially forcibly. Montana would be better off without him in public office, and he must resign. The Constitution actually says the exact opposite of Garcia’s claim and goes to great lengths to enshrine the right to free speech and ensure that our government does not have the authority to silence or punish political rivals. It is imperative that we guard against attempts to weaponize government power against political opponents, especially during fractured times like we have today. That’s why New Tolerance Campaign (NTC) is mobilizing Americans from every political background to take a stand. When given a chance to clarify his statements, Garcia doubled down, telling the Billings Gazette that “[socialists] are enemies of the free state. What do we do with our enemies in war? In Vietnam, (Afghanistan), all those. What did we do? … according to the Constitution, I’m telling you.” On Feb 3, the leadership of the Montana Republican party called on him to resign, addressing him directly by saying that “your actions have irreparably undermined the body in which you serve and irrevocably broken the trust of those you were elected to represent.” They are absolutely right. Garcia has the right to express disagreement with socialism, but it is never okay for an elected official to call for government violence against fellow citizens because of their political views. This is an insidious form of intolerance that has historically led to brutal atrocities time and time again.  NTC is providing activists with an opportunity to tell Garcia directly that he must go with just a few clicks. We are also collecting email-senders’ political affiliation, if they are willing to share it, in order to demonstrate that people of all political backgrounds oppose his remarks. All emails will be sent directly to Garcia immediately, and in addition, we will mail a list of all signers and a copy of the Constitution to Garcia. It is our hope that he will actually read the Constitution he claims to abide by and amend his ways accordingly. ###
