END ESG

Right now, State Treasurers from coast-to-coast are playing fast and loose with your tax dollars, ignoring their fiduciary duties and prioritizing investments in companies promoting so-called “Environmental, Social and Governance” (ESG) policies. Under the guise of ESG, big business is pushing progressive politics spanning everything from abortion to climate, LGBTQ issues and more. It’s also a total fraud. Investor Carl Icahn called ESG the “biggest hypocrisy of our time.” In the world of ESG, electric car manufacturer Tesla is given failing grades while fossil-fuel giant Exxon Mobil and tobacco company Philip Morris get stellar scores. Even worse: your taxpayer dollars are funding it via state investments in mutual funds, index funds, and direct investments made by state pension boards who may not even be aware they’re directing taxpayer revenue to underwrite this leftist power grab. State financial officers across the country are waking up to ESG’s true colors. Nine have already ended ESG investment. If your state is one of them, you can use the form at right to thank them for their leadership. If not, you can send a message to your State Treasurer telling them your tax dollars shouldn’t be invested in promoting radical social agendas.  Tell them to… END ESG!

Urge Columbia University’s New President to Hit the Reset Button on Support for Free Speech

University presidents wield substantial power to promote — or limit — free expression on college campuses. The president of Columbia University in New York City is no exception: From the moment she took office at the ivy league school on July 1, she inherited the challenge of protecting student and faculty free speech at an institution which maintains restrictive speech codes and ranks last in the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression’s (FIRE) “2022-23 College Free Speech Rankings.” As an adopter of the Chicago Statement, the gold standard for an institutional commitment to free expression, Columbia is obligated to defend and uphold speech rights for its students and faculty. One way to put its promise to protect free expression into practice is to reform restrictive policies in ways that satisfy various campus imperatives while also respecting free speech promises and principles. To ensure that Columbia not only promises to protect free speech but actively defends it, the New Tolerance Campaign is partnering with FIRE to empower students, alumni, and concerned citizens to urge Columbia University’s new president to improve the school’s speech policies. Ask Columbia’s new president, Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, to fulfill Columbia’s duty to protect free expression.

Send a Message to CEOs: Stop Pushing LGBT Marketing on Kids!

No matter your background, faith, or even sexual orientation, there’s one message everyone should be able to agree on when it comes to LGBT marketing by corporate America: leave the kids alone! That’s the message you’ll send to CEOs from coast-to-coast when you add your name to the petition on this page. In the United States, adults have the freedom to live their lives as they wish. At the same time, the perspectives of people of faith should be respected. And when it comes to discussions about sex and gender, parents should be in control. Sadly, boardrooms of businesses across the country are filled with people who feel they know better. They push kids’ books promoting gender confusion, stories about “nonbinary” babies, and instruction encouraging young girls to seek puberty blockers. Sign the petition on this page to tell America’s CEOs to stop pushing LGBT marketing on kids!

Stand Up for a Doctor Persecuted by the Texas Medical Board

Mary Talley Bowden has led a stellar career in medicine. The board-certified, Stanford-educated doctor has treated over 5,500 patients with COVID, saving lives in the process. Now, the Texas Medical Board (TMB) is threatening to terminate her license. Dr. Bowden gained attention in November of 2021 when she declared she would focus her practice on treating patients unvaccinated for COVID. “I am not anti-vaccination,” Bowden has asserted. But when she saw unvaccinated people being denied critical surgeries and other needed medical care, she felt compelled to help. Dr. Bowden is not accused of harming a single patient. Nonetheless, two Texas hospitals filed complaints against her with the Texas Medical Board. The TMB offered a settlement: a $5,000 fine, eight hours of continuing medical education, and a new jurisprudence exam. “I rejected their ‘offer’ and am proceeding with a public hearing,” Bowden tweeted. Her career now hangs in the balance. Send a message to Texas Medical Board President Dr. Sherif Zaafran asking him and his fellow Board members to end this senseless persecution of a doctor whose only goal is saving lives!

The FBI Must Be Held Accountable for Twitter Censorship

Twitter owner Elon Musk has pulled back the curtain on past dealings the FBI has had with the social media giant — and it’s not pretty. The “Twitter Files” revealed the Federal Bureau of Investigation regularly leaned on the platform’s content moderators and then-Head of Trust and Safety Yoel Roth to remove tweets, suspend accounts, and even share the location information of ordinary Americans. The fact that the FBI — a powerful law enforcement arm of the federal government — bullied Twitter, a private company, to silence speech should deeply concern every American. For FBI personnel, it’s a direct violation of their mission to “protect the American people and uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.” Tell Director Christopher Wray and FBI leadership to stop censoring Americans!

Morningstar Revises Antisemitic Policy Following NTC Action

In October 2022, 17 state attorney generals sent a scathing letter to Morningstar’s lawyers sharing concerns that the company’s subsidiary Sustainalytics is using ESG ratings to deny investment in corporations with ties to Israel. The ratings “draw no distinction between companies that operate in certain parts of Israel and those that operate in countries responsible for horrific human rights abuses,” the letter states, outlining how Morningstar views investment in Israeli companies on the same level as China, Russia, and Iran. Following work encompassing Jewish advocacy organizations and NTC grassroots action, Morningstar announced on Oct. 31, 2022 that it would be revising its policy.       [Photo credit: Montecruz Foto, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Flickr (cropped)]

Thank Penguin Books for Keeping Amy Coney Barrett’s Book Deal and Defending Free Speech

So-called human rights activists and literary professionals signed an open letter demanding that Penguin Random House rescind Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s book deal. The letter states, “…we are calling on Penguin Random House to recognize its own history and corporate responsibility commitments by reevaluating its decision to move forward with publishing Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett’s forthcoming book.” But on October 31, the publishing house made it clear that they would not bend to the demands of the censoring mob. “PEN America rejects calls for the cancellation of a planned book by Supreme Court Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett,” the company said in a statement. “It is the role of major publishers to make available a wide array of ideas and perspectives. In so doing, they afford readers, critics, historians, and journalists insight that can help elucidate truths, expose falsehoods, and deepen our understanding of consequential individuals and events.” Still, those who seek to scrap Justice Barrett’s tome remain undeterred. The letter calling for the termination of her book deal remains open and continues to amass signatures. At this moment, when censorship is gaining alarming ground over open debate, Penguin Random House should be commended for standing with intellectual integrity and a commitment to diverse views. Send a message to CEO Markus Dohle and Penguin Random House leadership thanking the company for supporting intellectual freedom — and encourage the publishing house to stay strong! Bernie Sanders for President Fined $15,000

ISSUE In both his 2016 and 2020 campaigns, Senator Bernie Sanders employed multiple staffers who were not U.S. citizens, including Maria Belén Sisa, his deputy national press secretary and a recipient of DACA protections. FEC regulations strictly prohibit foreign nationals from participating (directly or indirectly) in the decision-making process of any U.S. political campaign. ACTION The Coolidge Reagan Foundation filed a formal complaint with the FEC alleging that Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaigns violated federal election law by employing foreign nationals in key advisory roles. The complaint noted that these hires represented a direct violation of statutes designed to prevent foreign influence in American elections. [ READ OUR COMPLAINT ] OUTCOME The FEC found that Sanders’ 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns had in fact violated federal election law by employing foreign nationals in campaign advisory roles. As a result, the campaigns were fined $15,000 for the violations—reinforcing a critical principle: the integrity of our democracy depends on Americans shaping our political future.

Following Pressure from NTC Advocates Twitter Reinstates Paul Rossi’s Account

Update (07-19-22): Twitter has reinstated Paul Rossi’s account! Thank you to all of the advocates who stepped up and sent hundreds of messages to Twitter’s CEO in support of this outcome! See Paul’s message of thanks here: Feels good to be back, folx. Too bad for you @NAISnetwork. I have many many people to thank for their support & advice over the past two months as I addressed this suspension: @parentsunite_ @CBHeresy @ConceptualJames @New_Tolerance @peterboghossian & so many more. Onward! — Paul Rossi (@pauldrossi) July 20, 2022 Twitter had suspended Paul Rossi’s account. The longtime educator’s infraction? He exposed the woke curriculum being taught in classrooms across the country — and the school associations that encourage it. Rossi already lost his job for speaking out — Grace Church School ended his employment last year. Now, Twitter is trying to take his voice away, too. First, Rossi was locked out of his account after posting a clip of a critical race theory training for kindergarten teachers from the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). Then, after sharing a 90-second video from the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) in which an educator stated, “the Pythagorean Theorem doesn’t mean anything by itself,” Twitter suspended Rossi’s account — and ignored all his appeals for reinstatement. NAIS is infamous for imposing a highly politicized and divisive social justice agenda in its membership network of more than 1,600 schools; NYSAIS then distributes this content to its schools in an “indoctrination-in-exchange-for-accreditation” model. Rossi is just one man who put it all on the line to stand up for students; when the odds were agains him NTC supporters stood up.

NTC Advocates Emailed Georgetown Law Asking Them To Uphold Their Own Free Speech Policy

Update (6-7-2022):  NTC advocates rallied to support Shaprio and emailed Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor asking him to accept Ilya Shapiro’s apology and uphold Georgetown’s policy on freedom of speech.  Sadly, Georgetown fell short of its own stated policies about free speech. After Georgtown Law’s “investigation” into Shapiro’s tweet they allowed him to stay on faculty, but made it clear that they could monitor his social media. Following that, Shapiro joined the Manhattan Institute as their Director of Constitutional Studies.  On January 21, constitutional law scholar and expert on the Supreme Court Ilya Shapiro was announced by Georgetown Law as executive director and senior lecturer at the Georgetown Center for the Constitution. Shapiro’s role was set to begin on February 1 — until a tweet about President Biden’s insistence that his next SCOTUS pick will be a black woman. “Objectively best pick for Biden is Sri Srinivasan, who is solid prog & v smart. Even has identity politics benefit of being first Asian (Indian) American,” Shapiro tweeted on January 26. “But alas doesn’t fit into the latest intersectionality hierarchy so we’ll get lesser black woman.” Shapiro deleted the tweet and apologized. Soon thereafter, Georgetown’s Black Law Students Association demanded that Shapiro’s job offer be rescinded. More generally, Shapiro was expressing a sentiment shared by an overwhelming majority of Americans, 76% of whom want Biden to consider “all possible nominees” for the highest court according to an ABC News/Ipsos poll released on January 30, rather than play identity politics and further politicize what should be an objective body. And as Dan McLaughlin framed it in National Review: “Ilya’s use of the words ‘lesser black woman’ in this context was not the ideal way of phrasing this critique, but then, Twitter is fast-moving, space-constrained, and has no edit function, so it is hardly unusual to see things phrased there awkwardly.” Contrast this with Georgetown’s handling of Georgetown professor Carol Christine Fair, who wrote in 2018 that all “entitled white” Republicans supporting the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme court deserved to be killed: “All of them deserve miserable deaths while feminists laugh as they take their last gasps,” she declared. “Bonus: we castrate their corpses and feed them to swine? Yes.” Georgetown’s response to inquiries about Ms. Fair? “Our policy does not prohibit speech based on the person presenting ideas or the content of those ideas, even when those ideas may be difficult, controversial or objectionable,” the university said in a statement to Fox News. “While faculty members may exercise freedom of speech, we expect that their classrooms and interaction with students be free of bias and geared toward thoughtful, respectful dialogue.” Georgetown’s Human Resources Policy Manual states that “it is not the proper role of a university to insulate individuals from ideas and opinions they find unwelcome, disagreeable, or even deeply offensive. Deliberation or debate may not be suppressed because the ideas put forth are thought by some or even by most members of the University community to be offensive, unwise, immoral, or ill conceived. It is for the individual members of the University community, not for the University as an institution, to judge the value of ideas, and to act on those judgments not by seeking to suppress speech, but by openly and vigorously contesting those arguments and ideas that they oppose.” In the case of Ilya Shapiro, Georgetown Law will show whether these are genuine values or simply hollow words.

Emory University Charters Free Speech Forum Following 1,000+ Messages Sent by NTC Advocates

Update (04/11/22): Following pressure from NTC advocates, The Emory Free Speech Forum officially received a charter from the university. “The Emory Free Speech Forum is immensely grateful to the New Tolerance Campaign advocates for your support and action on our behalf.” —Emory Free Speech Forum Treasurer Cory Conley Thank you to the many New Tolerance Campaign grassroots advocates who made this victory possible! Emory University is crystal clear on their stated values. Their Respect for Open Expression policy declares the school is “committed to an environment where open expression of ideas is valued, promoted, and encouraged,” and vows to “not deny recognition to an organization because of disagreement with its mission or the viewpoints that it represents.” In the case of the Emory Free Speech Forum, it is upholding neither. The Emory Free Speech Forum is a student-led group “devoted to fostering critical discourse and open dialogue surrounding important issues in law and society.” In October, the organization was rebuffed in its application for formal chartering by the Emory Law Student Bar Association (SBA), which cited concerns that the group and its proposed topics of discussion could cause “harm.” The SBA also worried that chartering the Emory Free Speech forum would “likely give rise to a precarious environment — one where the conversation might very easily devolve,” and said it was “hesitant to issue a charter when there are no apparent safeguards in place to prevent potential and real harm that could result from these discussions.” No other campus organizations are required to have “safeguards” in order to be chartered. In the absence of a formal charter by the university, the Emory Free Speech Forum is prevented from reserving university space for meetings, denied access to university funds, and omitted from benefits enjoyed by other university student groups.   [photo: Emory University School of Law [CC BY-SA 4.0] / Wikimedia Commons]

Hillary for America and the DNC Fined $113,000

ISSUE In 2018, the Coolidge Reagan Foundation filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) alleging that Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Democratic National Committee violated federal law by misreporting payments tied to the now-debunked Steele Dossier. What they labeled as “legal advice and services” was really a Democratic machine that conspired with foreigners to manipulate the election—and our team of legal experts knew it. They recognized Clinton and the DNC’s illegal attempt to route campaign money through a law firm to Fusion GPS—the firm behind the discredited dossier on then-candidate Donald Trump. Compiled from lies, innuendo, and fabrications from foreign nationals, the dossier itself was a vehicle through which current and former agents of the Russian government were able to attempt to undermine Donald Trump’s candidacy. ACTION The Foundation petitioned the FEC to investigate and enforce the law, demanding transparency and accountability in campaign finance. This was one of several actions by the Foundation to ensure political elites play by the same rules as everyone else. [ READ OUR COMPLAINT ] OUTCOME After reviewing our complaint, the FEC fined Hillary for America and the Democratic National Committee $113,000. The fines confirmed what the Coolidge Reagan Foundation argued all along: these misreported payments were a violation of the law. This case wasn’t about one campaign, rather it was about defending the integrity of our elections. Our persistence helped expose how Democrats financed foreign-influenced misinformation, and in the end, they were held accountable.

Tell State Pension Boards: Divest from Un-American Express

Whether you know it or not, your taxpayer dollars are funding “wokeness” run amok at American Express — and you have the power to turn the tide of this madness. There’s nothing American about viewing employees primarily by their race — but Un-American Express is doing exactly that. Last August, Manhattan Institute fellow Christopher Rufo detailed the full embrace of woke doctrine at Un-American Express. Their “anti-racism” program actually perpetuates racism and inequality among their customers and employees. Among their policies: AmEx is tying executive bonuses to racial “equity” instead of merit AmEx instituted critical race theory training, teaching staff that “capitalism is racist” and asking workers to rank themselves on a hierarchy of “privilege” AmEx gave preferential contracts to suppliers based on race All of these practices are possibly unconstitutional and illegal. Even worse — your taxpayer dollars are funding this nonsense via mutual funds, index funds, and even direct investments made by state pension boards, who may not even be aware they’re directing taxpayer revenue to underwrite Un-American wokeness run wild. But this isn’t a lost cause — far from it! In January, West Virginia Treasurer Riley Moore announced he would divest all state investments from the woke capitalists at Blackrock. Now it’s Un-American Express’s turn. Send a message to your state pension board: their responsibility to taxpayers like you requires they divest from Un-American Express!

More than 26,000 Messages Sent to NBC Execs Saying #NotOneMinute of your Time Was Spent Watching the CCP’s Propaganda Olympics

In February, the New Tolerance Campaign announced our first grassroots boycott: urging supporters to commit to watching #NotOneMinute of the XXIV Olympic Winter Games hosted by the oppressive Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and broadcast in the United States by NBC. All total, more than 26,000 messages were sent to senior executives at NBC telling them #NotOneMinute of your time was spent watching their coverage of the CCP’s propaganda Games! China’s transgressions are infamous: they have rolled back democracy in Hong Kong, engaged in sweeping authoritarian censorship of the Chinese people, and perpetuated massive human rights abuses, including the ongoing genocide of Uighurs in Xinjiang. Bold and Brave activists, such as yourself, helped send a message to NBC that we will not tolerate China’s oppression of Uighurs. The #NotOneMinute campaign is the brainchild of Fox News host Laura Ingraham, who launched the initiative on her January 17 telecast. “Every minute you watch, you put money in the pocket of those profiting off the communist PR coup,” she said during the announcement. “We love our athletes, and we celebrate them — and we’re going to celebrate them upon their return, but we will respond to this hideous sellout by corporate America in the only language they understand: money.” As New Tolerance Campaign President Gregory T. Angelo tweeted: How much of the #Beijing2022 Olympics will I be watching? #NotOneMinute. Wishing all the athletes well, but not giving one SECOND of support to this CCP propaganda! — Gregory T. Angelo (@gregorytangelo) January 15, 2022 Thanks to your hard work and dedication, the Chinese winter Olympics had the smallest TV audience in its history.
